Abstract

Expanding the green revolution to meet the needs of a growing world will be both a great challenge and a great opportunity for plant and soil scientists. J. Russell Smith and others have shown that these challenges can be met by using existing, well understood, and proven technologies. By building upon and implementing the vision of Smith by developing perennial plants for food and bioenergy, we can move towards a prosperous bio-economy based on productive sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and more equitable worldwide wealth distribution.

IPPFBE has visited the Institute and plans to cooperate with VIR in future research activities. USU Cooperative Extension Utah State University Extension program provides valuable agricultural information. IPPFBE has worked with USU on reasearch projects. The Schroeder Institute in Uzbekistan IPPFBE has visited and acquired germplasm from the Schroeder Institute, as well as collaborating on research papers.
